Bibliophile quicky and Newspaper peeves
Charles Dewey
I have just read today’s morning
paper during lunch time because Sexy Mary and I opted for some neo-terrain
sleuthing for some of my toiletries, food, and some possible shops for a later
shopping spree of pasalubongs for
everyone back home in Laguna. And such a bibliophile as I am, a side trip to NBS-Gaisano
enabled me to purchase “Veronica decides to die” by Paulo Coelho and two very
fortunate sale books I quickly grabbed as soon as I’ve spotted them. Black dahlia by Steve Hodel and Liberal fascism: The secret histoy of the
American Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning by Jonah Goldberg. I
hope I will be finished reading one or two of them by night time.

So as I was saying about today’s
paper, Philippine Star ran a headline, that plummeted by my ire by a mile. It
was about Pacququio’s winning game yesterday: “Jubilation greets Pacquio
victory”. In the article what caught my attention was PGMA’s comment that went:
“Through our unity and hard work, Manny again won for our country. This is also
the path to victory of the Filipino people”.

I am not iconoclastic but it
seems that she’s really using another woeful tactic of winning some amore from the people. She is like
basking in the same limelight with Manny.
I would agree that in almost all of Manny’s game, we are united for a common
spirit of patriotism. The some of the arduous crowd even dies because of
fervent fanaticism! But the big question is, where does the “hard work” comes
in? Let me just remind those who will have the same statement that it was Manny
alone that trained day and night for his game. It was Manny’s skill that tried
knocking Clottey out of the ring, and it was Manny’s perseverance and discipline
that made him winner. The bottom line is: Manny was the one that did the job
and not anyone lese in the plain sight.
If one of the great speakers of
this country want to kindle some spark of patriotism or any other virtue in our
hearts, she or he should think about making want self as a unique and absolute
example in emanating qualities of a good leader and a responsible individual.
In my opinion, Gibo’s statement grabbed the right string of words for such an
effect (but I still won’t vote for him, mind you).
Be tact and be brief. Don’t
wallow in someone else’s win for your own sweet talking. Have some propriety!
